SHORT INFO: Kawangis ng Tribu is an Ethno Tribal Ensemble accompanied with intro rituals, free flow dances, cultural dances and fire dancing. Our group name "Kawangis" ng Tribu which means kagaya or katulad ng tribu (Kawangis-like ng-the Tribu-tribe) having an objective to help in preserving our own slowly fading cultural heritage and traditions has dedicated itself through portraying our own tribal beats along with presenting other tribal rhythms and instruments from around the world such as African, Latin, Mediterranean and Aborigine beats. Kawangis ng Tribu is a group of Craftsmen, Musicians and Performance Artist which originated from Palawan and has been performing around the Philippines since Sept. 2004. As Culture Advocates, even though we are not pure tribe members, we believe that it is our obligation and our privilege being descendants of our forefathers to become supporters of our own culture and to present it with great pride and respect. Promoting it not only to locals but as well as to foreign listeners and audiences. GROUP BIOGRAPHY: We are but simple individuals who gathered one at a time, all having the same aspect and love for music. A collaboration of fellow craftsmen and musicians, brotherhood and friendship, discipline and objective, which holds and binds us all together, having fun and loving the music that we do, exchanging ideas, giving joy instead of expectation and comparison has put us in harmony with each other through music. We believe that music is from the Earth and is for the Earth. The beat of the drum is like our mothers heart beat which is natural before we are born. Music which came from our roots, the tribes of the world and our own, which is from nature and the innocent beauty of raw music. Earth.Culture.Roots.Rhythm GENRE: Ethno Tribal, World Music, Earth Rhythms With the help of meeting some of our local tribes and learning from them personally, through internet research on their live performances, as well as listening to other influential Neo-Ethnic and World Music bands and basic hands on training on Philippine brass instruments and Djembe drumming lesson, we began to explore the genre of “Ethno” music (from the word ethnic, connected to the word “moderno” ) and made our music a fusion of ethnic/tribal rhythms and latin african rhythms which are all based from the different cultures of the Philippines. Implementing the use of indigenous instruments such as the Tambol, Agung, Babandil, Gangsa, Kulintang, Kudyapi, Hegalong, Atong-atong, Solibao, Dabakan, Bungkaka, Kubing, Gabang, Budyong, Rainstick and other made of Seeds-Bamboo and wood instruments. We also use other instruments such as Djembe from the African tribes, Didgeridoo from the Aborigines of Australia, Dumbek, Tambourine from Middle East, wind chimes, flute and more. Part of our performance is also portraying chants and cultural dances that represents the melodious and lively culture of the Filipinos. Among the dances is also the performance art of fire dancing from the Maori tribe of the Polynesians (one of the early migrators of the Philippines) using several tools such as the poi, staff (long stick) and fan. Also one of the dance is done in the form of Philippine martial arts of Eskrima or stick fighting, using arnis with fire. ACHIEVEMENTS: Our group has journeyed quite a while and thankfully we have come to release a Demo Cd last May 2011 entitled "Tao sa Gubat". It has 6 tracks including our pieces called Gubat, Suroy, Indak,Ugnay, Maharlika and Digma.Though the demo cd is all done in live recording, the proceeds of the sales will all be saved in preparation for our studio recording. GRATITUDE: Though through a few years, 8 years is not that long to tell our future, we are still young, and still a lot to learn. Not many groups last this long unless a weak discipline and less respect for each member. Along the way, we may encounter more challenges and trials but gladly our bond persists, with the quote on our heads: "always put your feet on the ground" coz what comes up must come down. We may have encountered many things, met many people, learned many things and yet we make sure to always bow our heads and give gratitude to GOD, thank the people who supports us, believes and fights with us and embrace not only our influences and inspirations but as well as our fellow musicians. Other Info: Kawangis ng Tribu is a member of the Maharlika Artist and Writers Federation MAWF, a group of local and famous artist of the Philippines where they held an annual national cultural movement called Sunrise Festival aiming to develop a total integration of all aspects of the arts in this country: music, visual, literary, dance, theater, senses, emotions, intuition and spirit has been steadily successful in moving towards its goal due to the voluntary and collaborative effort among professional and upcoming artists and writers across the nation and from all over the globe.Through the MAWF we joined the movement of encouraging everyone that we are once called "Maharlikans" or the people from "Maharlika"which means "great creation or land of the free" as it was called to the people before it was conquered by the Spaniards.
